Bonjour à Grenoble! I have arrived safely and am comfortably settled into my home-stay residency. The woman with whom I am living, Josiane, is very sweet and tries hard to make me feel at home. She is a hairdresser and has her own studio in downtown Grenoble. Her daughter is grown and currently lives in Paris. The apartment is quite “French,” as it were. The window in my bedroom looks out onto the mountains on the west side of the city and I can see the river that separates Grenoble from Fontaine, the next town over. Though the location of the apartment is not in “Le Centre Ville,” there is a very easy tramway system that takes me right to the University and the center.
The weather thus far has been fickle. One thing is certain; it is quite windy! Though the “grenobloises” assure me that it usually is not so windy, I have yet to witness a calm day. The temperature has been mid 60’s but it feels cooler due to the wind and patchy cloud covering. Apparently it gets very hot and humid in the summer time however, so I am trying to enjoy the cooler temperatures.
The entire city is wireless, which is a huge plus for the large student population. In my apartment however, the signal I pick up is locked under someone else’s server, so I must go to a nearby café to e-mail, etc.
Classes start tomorrow….I will keep you updated as the days go by…
